Cu Chi

Cu Chi

2-hour northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels offer something rare: a chance to step inside history rather than just observe it.

This 250-kilometer underground network was hand-dug during the Vietnam War. Soldiers lived, fought, and survived here for years. The tunnels connected villages, housed hospitals, and stored supplies. Walking through them today, you feel the weight of what happened here.

Most visitors choose between two sites: Ben Dinh (closer, more developed) or Ben Duoc (further out, quieter). I recommend Ben Duoc if you want fewer crowds and a more authentic experience.

You’ll crawl through narrow passages, see trapdoors hidden in the jungle floor, and visit underground rooms. It’s not comfortable. The tunnels are hot, claustrophobic, and deliberately confusing. That’s the point.

Some sections have been widened for tourists, but it’s still tight. Wear light clothes, closed shoes, and expect to get dirty. If you’re claustrophobic, tell your guide. There are surface exhibits you can explore instead.

Practical notes:

The site opens at 7:00 AM. Go early to beat the heat and tour groups.

Book a private guide who knows the history deeply. The difference in what you learn is significant.

Plan 3-4 hours for a thorough visit.

This isn’t a polished, comfortable attraction. It’s raw, confronting, and deeply human. That’s exactly why it matters.
