Whale Island: Nha Trang’s Quiet Alternative

Whale Island (Hon Ong) sits 20 kilometers north of Nha Trang, but it feels worlds away. This small island has one resort, no roads, no motorbikes, and no other development. If you’re tired of Vietnam’s busier beach destinations, this is the antidote.

The Island

Whale Island is tiny. You can walk the perimeter in about an hour. The beaches are clean, the water is clear, and the pace is deliberately slow. There’s decent snorkeling off the rocks at both ends of the main beach. You’ll see reef fish, occasional turtles, and healthy coral in the shallower areas.

The island gets its name from the whale sharks that occasionally pass through these waters, though sightings are rare. Local fishermen once rescued a stranded whale here, and the island became a spiritual site. There’s still a small whale temple on the property.

Whale Island Resort

This is the only place to stay, and that’s the point. The resort has about 30 bungalows scattered along the beach and hillside. They’re simple: fan or air conditioning, hot water, mosquito nets, basic furniture. Don’t expect luxury. Think comfortable beach huts rather than polished villas.

The food is surprisingly good. Three meals daily are included, served family-style in the open-air restaurant. Fresh seafood, Vietnamese dishes, some Western options. The kitchen accommodates dietary requirements if you let them know in advance.

There’s a small dive center on-site. The diving around Whale Island isn’t world-class, but it’s solid. Nearby sites include Hon Tai and Hon Yen, where you’ll find decent visibility (10-20 meters) and a good variety of marine life. The staff are experienced and safety-conscious.

What to Do (and Not Do)

This isn’t an activities resort. There’s kayaking, snorkeling, diving, and hiking to a viewpoint. That’s about it. No spa, no gym, no entertainment program.

Most guests spend their days reading, swimming, and doing very little. If you need constant stimulation or nightlife, go somewhere else. If you want to genuinely disconnect, this works perfectly.

The resort attracts a mix of travelers: couples looking for quiet, divers exploring the area, and families who want their kids to play freely without traffic or crowds.

Getting There

You’ll transfer from Nha Trang by road and a short ride by speedboat to the resort. The resort arranges everything. Pick-up is from their office near the main beach.

Most people book at least three nights. Anything shorter feels rushed given the transfer time. A week is ideal if you really want to unwind.

The Reality

Whale Island Resort hasn’t changed much in 20 years. That’s both its charm and its limitation. It’s dated, unpretentious, and unapologetically simple.

We send clients here when they specifically ask for quiet and authenticity over polish. It delivers exactly what it promises: a small island, a simple resort, and genuine peace. Just know what you’re getting before you go.
