Sihanoukville

In every major city, there is a backpacker street but Cambodia takes this seriously as there is a town dedicated solely for backpackers, the coastal capital of the Southwest – Sihanoukville. Formerly Kampon Som before the development turned it into what it is today, its main draw is its laid-back vibe, great white beaches, hospitable locals, cheap accommodations, and unforgettable parties.

Visitors can forget about the town center and head straight for the beaches, such as Ochheuteal Beach and the connecting Serendipity Beach. This is where most of the action, bars, restaurants, accommodations, and parties are located. If you’re looking for something more peaceful, Otres Beach is the perfect choice with its 4 km long stretch of pristine white sand.

The usual water activities are present so one could go on a snorkeling and diving trip and tourists who can’t stay put can opt to visit the nearby islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem or one of the lesser-known ones such as Koh Totang, Koh Thmei, and Koh Tah Kiev.

There is currently a lot of development going on in Sihanoukville, with a lot of casinos appearing but the beaches are still worthwhile to visit and vital to local tourism and economy.
